COURSE DESCRIPTION
Freestyle Script is a casual style of cursive lettering that captures the freedom and spontaneity of handwriting. It’s loose, expressive, and packed with personality—making it an essential tool for lettering artists who want to create lively and inviting work. Use Freestyle Script to add warmth to headlines, produce engaging wordmarks, or give a playful and uniquely individual touch to lettering pieces. This simple yet highly effective technique adapts beautifully to all kinds of commercial jobs, as well as any personal creative project you dream up.

Although Freestyle Script looks like it’s made quickly and effortlessly, it’s actually carefully planned and meticulously drawn by hand. (Don’t worry; you don’t need to have good handwriting.) In this info-packed hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to develop one-of-a-kind Freestyle Script lettering through a clear and repeatable step-by-step process. We’ll cover how to construct connecting cursive forms, arrange letters in engaging compositions, give layouts a sense of rhythm, and modify contours so you can create unique and compelling lettering. You'll also experiment with a range of common writing tools to produce endless variations of Freestyle Script.

The class combines detailed presentations with informative drawing demos so you can follow along at your own pace. You'll also receive a FREE 38-page PDF illustrated guidebook packed with detailed instruction, including essential drawing techniques and loads of real-world examples.

Add the bonus PDF workbook to your ticket for extra reference and practice. Whether you’re a beginner who’s motived to expand your skills, or an experienced artist interested in bringing something new to your professional work, this class will provide you with the know-how you need to create truly distinctive Freestyle Script lettering.

Viewing time is approximately 5 hours.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to:

• Broaden your professional skill set with proven techniques

Hi! I'm Ken Barber, a lettering artist, type designer, educator, and author of the award-winning Lettering Manual. I blame Don Martin comics, Santa Cruz skateboard graphics, and speed metal logos for my infatuation with letterforms. For 30 years, I've produced dozens of fonts, as well as brand identities for companies worldwide—including Sandals Resorts, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Only Vegas, the city of Los Angeles, and the Broadway musical, The Cher Show. My work is in the collections of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. I'm the type director and studio letterer at House Industries, and an instructor at The Cooper Union in New York City.
