COURSE DESCRIPTION
Sans serif letter styles are among the most fundamental and versatile in lettering. Their simple and straightforward forms have the power to grab attention in bold designs, yet convey understated elegance in sophisticated settings. But don‘t let their outwardly uncomplicated and easygoing appearance fool you; sans serif letters are loaded with nuances that artists must understand in order to draw them confidently and convincingly.

In this info-packed online workshop, you’ll learn all of the secrets for creating successful and compelling sans serif lettering. We’ll begin with a survey of foundational styles, identifying the distinctive voice of each so you understand how to maximize the impact of sans serif in different design applications. Then, with handy reference models as our guide, we'll draw a selection of uppercase and lowercase letters. Examining reoccurring features among groups of related letterforms, you'll discover commonly overlooked yet critical details so you can avoid making mistakes in your own work. Not only that, you‘ll also learn how to maintain consistency throughout a lettering composition as we consider the importance of visually uniform strokes, balanced positive and negative spaces, and properly proportioned capital and small letters.

In addition to gaining invaluable knowhow through instructional presentations and interactive drawing demonstrations, you'll receive extra guidance with the help of a free 34-page illustrated PDF guidebook. Unravel more secrets of sans serif lettering with the bonus 30-page workbook, and sharpen your new skills even further!

In this workshop, you’ll learn:
• The origins and evolution of hand-lettered sans serif genres
• The essential varieties of sans serif letters that letterers need to know
• How to utilize various sans serif styles appropriately in different design settings
• The proper construction, proportion, and spacing of sans serif letterforms
• Methods for modifying the construction and contours of sans serif letters
• Practical drawing techniques to compose balanced and engaging sans serif lettering

This workshop is ideal for:
• Beginners and novice artists interested in gaining a solid foundation in drawing sans serif letterforms
• Intermediate and experienced letterers looking to improve their abilities and expand their skill set
• Students from my other hand-lettering classes who want to broaden their stylistic range
• Designers who want a deeper understanding of sans serif letters to inform font selection, improve type pairing, and enhance personal work
• Typeface designers who want a foundational understanding of the various sans serif genres
• Art directors who want to be able to confidently hire skilled lettering artists, and improve their communication with professional letterers
• Artists and illustrators curious about the details of sans serif letter construction and creation

I'll give lettering demonstrations on an iPad using Procreate, but you can also use these tools if you want to draw along with me:
• pencils and a pencil sharpener
• an eraser
• tracing paper
• grid/graph paper
• a ruler
• a computer or other electronic device, a reliable internet connection, plus a Zoom account to join the live online meeting and to watch the video recording
• access to a printer if you want to refer to a hard copy of the PDF guidebook and optional workbook
• a copy of my Lettering Manual is strongly recommended
• Although I'll be drawing in Procreate on an iPad, the limited timeframe will not allow for hardware or software instruction.

Hi! I'm Ken Barber, a lettering artist, type designer, educator, and author of the award-winning Lettering Manual. I blame Don Martin comics, Santa Cruz skateboard graphics, and speed metal logos for my infatuation with letterforms. For 30 years, I've produced dozens of fonts, as well as brand identities for companies worldwide—including Sandals Resorts, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Only Vegas, the city of Los Angeles, and the Broadway musical, The Cher Show. My work is in the collections of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. I'm the type director and studio letterer at House Industries, and an instructor at The Cooper Union in New York City.
